On Wednesday 1st July, the hottest day of the year, 300 C + a bunch of BRJ'ers met at Hinchingbrooke for the annual Martin Doig Guesstimate. This event is held in memory of Martin a keen BRJ member who did so much for the club over the years.
As with previous years the route and distance of the junior and senior runs are revealed to runners on the evening and we ask runners to donate a small fee to the club charity and predict their finish times. The runners then head off for a spot of naked running (without watches, Garmins and satellites to guide them). The winner is the runner who finishes in a time closest to their estimate. The event is an all-inclusive fun run where anyone can be the winner irrespective of speed.
The runs this year were a distance of 1.8 miles for the juniors and 4.8 miles for the adults with both routes incorporating a “fly past” the 'Martin Doig Memorial Bench' located by the lake in Hinchingbrooke Country Park.
With 30 junior runners taking part the results were as follows; in third place with a run time 15s outside his estimate was Adam Hunt, in second place was last year’s winner Keelan Duffy with a finish time just 5 secs from his predicted time. In first place with a run time just 2 seconds outside her guess was Chloe Loosly.
We had 17 adults participate in the seniors run with much mumbling about the heat and the route which incorporated everyone’s favourite, Portholme! In 3rd place for the seniors with a guess 18 seconds different from her actual run time was Frankie Lasman. Our joint senior winners were Rachel Real & Juliet Corby who both guessed a run time 4 seconds different to the finish time achieved on the day.
With thanks to all the willing club volunteers who contributed their time and cake baking expertise to help on the day which helped us raise funds for our club charity Living Sport.
Bedford Parkrun 5k Debut at this venue for both Jackie Wren & Phil Pearsons who also both secured runner-up spots in their respective age categories
Cambridge Parkrun 5k In this event, Sue Yendley was runner-up in her age category and 2 Parkrun milestones were also reached. Namely, Keith Simmons completing event # 25, whilst Julie Holmes reached Parkrun # 50!
Gorlestone Cliffs Parkrun 5k Linda Crookbecame the first BRJ'er to participate in the Gorlestone Cliffs Parkrun. The course runs up & down the cliff's and on the day the temperature was around 27 degree heat, the location allowed Linda and the other participants to cool down in the sea afterwards.
Riverside Runners 10k 14 of our members competed in this "one-off" event to celebrate 25 years since the formation of the Riverside Runners (St Neots) Club. The tough course and the extreme heat meant that no PB's were achieved today, although Gillian Peck secured 1st in her age Catogery. Anna Kay and Mark Dickinsonchoose this event to complete their debut club runs whilst for Beth Falkner this was her first Club 10k.
Milton Keynes Olympic Distance Frank Holmes was the sole BRJ participant and despite the heat secured a PB over this distance by more than 20 mins.
